New Projects
As you can see from the architectural drawing, something new is coming to our old Pioneer Cemetery! We are in the beginning stages of creating a “cremation garden” with above-ground columbarium niches in the area just east of the current office. The drawings are nearly complete, and decorative benches have been ordered. The project will be constructed in three phases, beginning with the center section. This is a big
undertaking, and fundraising is now underway.
We have a great desire to honor both the veterans who are already interred here, and Veterans who wish to be interred here in the future; so the initial focus will be on our Veteran’s memorial. This central area features a slightly raised flagpole that will stand in front of a five-foot-high angled wall, which will display the emblems of each branch of the Armed Forces. Each of the 12”x12” niches will be able to hold two urns; there will be larger family niches that will hold several urns in the triangular sections between the
standing columbaria.
We feel that this cremation garden represents an important addition to the choices available at East Union Cemetery. We are looking to not only beautify the grounds and address future needs, but to provide another quiet, contemplative area in which to honor and protect our loved ones.
